Looking for Ideas and People to do a project

Hi, All,

I am tapping the immense resources here for some contribution (idea, time, advice, whatever) to a project I wanted to do. The project is to have a book published with a collection of children's paintings/drawings about their hometown and their life from different parts of the world.

The idea came from an experience I had while travelling in India 3 years ago. I went to visit a very remote village near Jodhpur. When we arrived in the field, there were several women working under the afternoon sun. Then there were about 10-15 children, around 6-7 years old, ran towards us, all excited and shouting "Pen, Pen". I was puzzled and didn't understand what they wanted. The local guide explained that when the first group of foreigners came, they wanted to leave something for these kids but didn't have anything other than pen, so that's what they left. Thereafter, these kids only knew to ask for pen from people they met the first time.

Normally this would just be another thing happened on my trip, but somehow I felt sad about this. I was fortunate enough to be able to travel, to see different places, meet different people, to dream about future, but I know there are all those people, kids especially who couldn't do this. For them, their view of the outside world is what has been left behind.

I want to have this book published as a gift for them, I would like to go back thereto leave this book with them, to show them there are so much more than what they know, what they see, to give them their dreams.

I really liked your story, I work with children and often read to them about other children and the simple adventures in their lives, when they ask for these stories over and over you know you have awakened their curiosity about the world outside their own experience.

That's a great idea..unfortunately I haven't had any experience with publishing books. But I guess you can start by talking to local publishers and getting their support. Or even publish it independently...if you have enough resources.

I think you have a lovely idea, I thought I could offer you some sort of advise! I studied Illustration for a year, and learned a bit about the difficulties of getting a book published. Its an incredibly difficult area and personally, I think you would do well organizing it as a charitable cause. If you collect the images and text you want to use in the book and collect sponsorship you could publish it independently. You may need an illustrator to put the final layouts together for you, I hope someone will be able to offer you their skills. There are lots of websites that can offer book binding and publishing services, one such is:

(though I have never used it myself!) I know that publishing a book is a lot of work, I wish you all the best in your project and that it comes together as something beautiful. Hope this was some help!

I went to Africa a few times and took books, pens and other stuff and always went to a local school to hand them out, its great seeing how happy they are after giving them all something worthy and that cost a fiver to me but means so much to them

im writing a book, been about a year now, half way through but im enjoying it, its good fun, and as I am learning knowledge and ways of free myself and helping humanity the book seems to change, and has gone from a book filled with hate, scary negative stories to a possitive outcome, or thats what im trying to do

do you want to have it published in order to raise money for something or is it solely a book for these kids?
i just wondered if its something you could do yourself with the right software on your home computer?? perhaps have a picture and short story laminated and hand out several copies of each story you have if that makkes sense...........otherwise the charity idea is fantastic too.
